Get ready to get published!

Moncton seminar will help writers become authors

Moncton (NB) March 20, 2010 - Have you ever dreamed of becoming a published author? Then plan to attend the “How to Get Published” seminar on Friday, April 23 in Moncton during the Frye Festival. The seminar will cover everything from getting started to getting an agent, from getting your short pieces published to finding a book publisher, from writing a query letter to writing what the publishers want.

Workshop leader Brian Henry has been a book editor and creative writing instructor for more than 25 years. He teachers creative writing at Ryerson University and George Brown College and has led workshops everywhere from Boston to Buffalo. But his proudest boast is that he’s helped many of his students to get their first book published and to launch their careers as authors.

As a special option, participants are invited to bring a draft of a query letter they might use to interest an agent or publisher in their book.

The seminar will run from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and will be held at the City Grill, 2nd floor, 130 Westmorland Street. The fee is $55 for the general public, or $50 for Professional Writers Association of Canada (PWAC) members. Participants are asked to register online for the seminar, and all Frye Festival events, through the Moncton Coliseum box office at tickets.moncton.ca.

The seminar is sponsored by Enterprise Greater Moncton, with the collaboration of PWAC’s Moncton Chapter and the Frye Festival. PWAC’s Moncton Chapter is part of a non-profit support network that represents the interests of 600 writers in Canada’s magazine and newspaper industries. To learn more about the Moncton Chapter, its members and events visit www.monctonwriters.ca.

The Frye Festival brings the best local, national and international authors, poets, playwrights, graphic novelists, spoken word artists and storytellers to Moncton, New Brunswick for a bilingual celebration of words. This year, the festival runs April 19 to 25. Visit www.frye.ca.

Professional Writers Association of Canada – Moncton Chapter Presents

Professional Writers Association of Canada – Moncton Chapter Presents:
Reveille - an open-mic event to share stories, songs, poems from youth

Moncton (NB) – Question: What do you get when you ask adults to read no-holds-barred tales from their youth? Answer: Reveille - a fun-filled night that gives a forum to our early writings, as embarrassing as they may be. This evening of literary hilarity returns to the Frye Festival by popular demand on Wednesday, April 21.

Reveille is an event where members of the audience and special guests, including local celebrities and Frye Festival authors, share "works" they wrote as children and teenagers (e.g. angst-filled poetry, sorrowful diary entries, sappy songs) in an open mic format. The more cringe-worthy, the better! The event gets underway at 7 p.m. at the Moncton Press Club.

A presentation of the Professional Writers Association of Canada – Moncton Chapter, Reveille’s goal is to give voice to the childhood writer. The event will be emceed by two Chapter members: Brian Cormier, public relations specialist and newspaper columnist and Lana Hansen, communications consultant.

Anyone can participate and admission is free. Spectators should come prepared to groan, laugh and cheer.

To date, four Frye Festival authors have volunteered to step up to the microphone and read writings from their childhood: Beth Powning, Jacob Berkowitz, Kathryn Kuitenbrouwer and Kay Stone. (Biographies follow)

APRIL – EASTER – SPRING

Are we ready for this? It means all the Car Clubs have to get to work for the summers’ schedules.
We can’t complain about the winter weather. It was a busy winter for us here at the Hall Of Fame. We had the Conference room rented several times. Had a Valentines Dance, and on April 3rd there was a wedding and reception.
The 4-wheeler draw was March 26; this was our 5th and our most successful to date. Kellie Cromwell from Quispamsis was the winner. Thank you each and everyone for selling tickets and buying tickets.

There are many things planned for the upcoming months.

The next big thing is April 10th at 7:30pm; it’s the Basement Players Inc. putting on a comedy play “Aunt Tillie Goes To Sea”. Admission for this is Adults $10.00 and Children 12 and under $5.00. Come and bring a friend.

May 8 is our Annual Meeting at 3:00pm.in Conference room B at the Hall Of Fame. It is very important that all members attend this meeting. This is also the election of officers. If you know anyone that can be elected to the Presidents position, please be thinking about it.

On May 22 the Hartland Band has booked for a dance. Tickets will be sold at the door and are $8.00 per person. They play Classic Country.

The Municipal Visitors Information Centre is to be open by June 1st. Any of the Motor Sports Clubs and Race Tracks may put their information here for the public and tourist to have access to. In order to have the Information Centre Question Mark we have to give up our small meeting room. We could also use some volunteers to help with this. We need volunteers to help with other areas. Anyone that can give us a few hours now and then please get in touch with us.

June 5th is our 5th Annual Petty AutoFest Motor Sports Exhibition, this year being held at the Maritime Motorsports Hall Of Fame. Vehicles will be displayed outside. The starting time is 9:00am. The admission charge is $5.00 per person. The Border Town Band is playing in the afternoon again this year. There is an added attraction this year, a Pig Roast. The pork will be served on a bun starting at 11:00am. The proceeds go to the Petitcodiac & District Figure Skating Club. All Motor Sport Vehicles are welcome. Bring your friends and vote for the Vehicle that you like the best; a plaque will be given to the one with the most votes in each division. A live auction is also planned. The winning ticket for the toolbox will be drawn as well.

November 6 is our 5th Annual Induction Ceremony being held at the New Brunswick Casino at Magnetic Hill. The ticket price is $80.00 per person. A block of room has been set-aside for anyone wishing to register at that Hotel. Rooms are $149.00 plus tax. These rooms need to be booked by October 6 for this rate. Inductees will be announced in September. Derek Oland, Executive Chairman for Moosehead Breweries Limited is scheduled to be Guest Speaker.

MEMBERSHIP notices were sent out in the December newsletter, thank you to the people that have already replied. However, there are still some that have not renewed at this time. Your support is very much needed to keep the building functioning.

They are starting to take out some vehicles and will bring in others. There have been a number of people through touring the Museum. We are looking forward to the summer. The picnic tables are already built, ready to be installed. Looking forward to having the landscaping done.

If any of you have any fund raising ideas PLEASE pass them on to us, and oh yes, help us make them work. We do need your help with your Maritime Motorsports Hall Of Fame.

If any one has knowledge of past involvement in motorsports, such as drivers and tracks, owners of tracks, wearing apparel, pictures and programs or anything else that we may use, please contact us. These are all things we need to present the history of Motor Sports.

Items that we still need: Projector screen to be mounted on the wall, a flip chart, mannequins, racks for information centre, another computer, printer, stands to display info at displays, scanner to do large articles and filing cabinets.

Have a great summer and you all come to visit the Hall Of Fame, tell your friends. Your support is very much needed.

SPRING LETTERS FROM MICHAEL CHESLEY JOHNSON

27 March 2010 From Sedona, Arizona

Sad to say, but our last Paint Sedona students departed this weekend. It was a great winter with everyone turning out some really good work. Trina and I enjoyed making new friends and renewing ties with old ones.

But now it's time to move on. Once we close up the house, we will head up to Utah for two weeks to teach a workshop, and then on to more workshops in Illinois, Indiana and Vermont. We expect to reach Campobello Island around mid-May. We'll follow spring the whole way east, and by the time we reach Campobello, we'll need to mow the lawn for the first time. As much as I enjoyed painting the high desert, I can't wait to get back to the ocean again!

By the way, I'll be delivering some more work to my gallery in Sedona, Windrush Gallery before I leave. I'll post the images of the inventory on my website so you can see them, and if you are interested in purchasing them, you can contact the gallery directly: 800-323-0115 or info@windrushgallery.net. John and Linda will be happy to send you images, too.

I still have room in my summer Campobello Island workshops, but things are starting to heat up. Maybe it's the improved economy, but students are signing up early, so I urge you to not delay. Please go to my workshop page to learn more about Campobello and other upcoming workshops. For Campobello, if you bring a friend, I'll give you $50 off the $300 tuition fee. Following this letter is a complete list of my 2010 workshops.

Finally, don't forget that I have several publications out now. Two books, two DVDS, a portfolio and a calendar. You can find out more about these at my website at http://www.michaelchesleyjohnson.com/html/book.htm.
